HE’S FINALLY DONE IT

He’s done it! It’s been a long time coming but we finally got to celebrate a Makris goal and it was a strike worthy of the wait.

A lovely cross field ball was nodded down perfectly by Edwards and the Cypriot took a touch to control and another to volley into the roof of the net from 18 yards to send the Bescott faithful into pandemonium.

It came just after the break in a game I felt the lads played really well in. There were patches in that first half where we played some really great football and but for a late offside flag and a fine save from the oxford goalkeeper, we could easily have gone into the break 2 goals to the good.

Going a goal up actually seems to knock the wind out of us a little bit. We chose to sit deep and try and soak up some pressure, but with over 40 minute still to play that always seemed dangerous. I actually don’t think Oxford were good value for their equaliser, yes they saw much more of the ball in the second half, but they only really created one clear chance before their goal, clipping the post and having the rebound cleared off the line.

Their goal itself was extremely fortunate. A fairly strong strike towards the bottom left of the goal saw Neil dive in anticipation for a shot I’m sure he’d have saved, only to see the ball deflect off a sprawling James O’Connor and trickle agonisingly into the middle of the goal.

Overall a game that will be remembered for one thing and one thing only, Andreas Makris finally scoring his first goal…COYR

*side note. Bumped into Scott Laird pre match and just wanted to say what a nice genuine guy he was. He gave me the impression he was keen to stay for next season, something I’m sure the fans will be happy about. He gave me a good 5/10 minutes chat and was very genuine and honest about the club which was refreshing to hear. Hopefully see him in red again next season.IMG_4001
