Shrimpers end our season

In quite possibly the most Walsall way possible any final flicker of hope for the season dies as the Saddlers throw away a 2 goal lead in the final 30 minutes at Southend to come away empty handed. A few fans had commented heading into the game that it was time to think about next season with the playoffs looking very much out of reach.

I was one of those fans and I was very happy to see Makris starting the game to get him some experience for next year. Saying that, when a Frank Moussa brace saw the boys head into the break with a 2 goal lead the optimist in me felt maybe the season would stay alive one more week…

But a complete collapse in the final third of the game made sure 2016/17 will go down as a very typical Walsall FC season. Safety secured, playoffs out of reach, another mid table finish is now all we can expect. I am surely not the only one who thought ‘here we go’ when Nile Ranger pulled a goal back for the shrimpers. And sure enough in typical fashion the game was turned on its head just 20 minutes later, suspect goalkeeping from Neil for two of the goals in my opinion but in reality there can be no excuses for what the travelling fans had to witness.

My concern now will be that the players have very little to play for and if all Whitney can do is spout cliché after cliché in his press conferences, my confidence in him to get the players motivated for the final games is starting to be questioned. Hopefully the passion of the likes Laird, McCarthy and Ozzy can make sure performances on the pitch don’t reflect the fact the players are surely now thinking about their summer holidays.

Heading into the international break I can think of only one thing I want from the rest of this season, and that is a Makris goal! Fortunately I can make every game home and away till the end of the season now and I cannot wait to celebrate it- though knowing us it’ll probably come as a last minute consolation 3 down at Shrewsbury…
